2nd January 1921 – Born at 110 William Street, Hebburn, County Durham. Fifth child and third daughter of John William and Bridget (née Mannion) Newman. She was named Ellen but was always known as Helen by the family. I think the mix-up happened because the Latin version of her name, used at her baptism, was Helen – and she also preferred it!

30th January 1921 – Baptised at St Aloysius RC Church, Hebburn, County Durham. Godparents: Thomas Coyne and Helen (Ellen) Coyne (her father’s eldest sister).

30th April 1942 – Married Ronald Sills in the Parish Church of Watford, Hertfordshire. Ronald’s residence is given as Merton Road, Watford and Helen’s is given as Merton Road (they lived at different numbers!), Watford. Marriage witnessed by John Marten and Lin Southwood.

9th December 1942 – Widowed when Ronald Sills was lost at sea on HMS Marigold.  She kept in touch with her first mother-in-law for many years.

9th May 1945 – Married Adam Muirhead Miller in the Register Officer in Watford, Hertfordshire. Adam’s residence was given as Shenley, Hertfordshire but his home address is noted as Craighall Road, Glasgow. Helen’s residence was given as Durban Road, Watford, Hertfordshire. Marriage witnessed by Bridget Williams (Helen’s sister) and Dorothy Mary Woollams.

Helen had met Adam in Watford while he was in hospital with a shrapnel wound and she was nursing him.  They moved to Glasgow where they had two daughters and a son.

13th October 2016 – Helen’s son-in-law Martin rang my Mum to let her know that Helen had passed away in hospital in Glasgow.

24th October 2016 – cremation service at Glasgow Crematorium.  It was a small affair attended by close and extended family and some friends.

Image: from my collection.  Don’t know who took it.  It shows Helen and Adam Miller with their three children and my grandmother, Bridget Newman. Taken in 1952, probably in Watford.—–
